Night terrors, which are also known as sleep terrors, are a form of parasomnia which affects about 2.2% of the adult population, according to the Sleep Foundation. Very few people over the age of 65 suffer from night terrors. Night terrors are a sleep disorder which causes a person to sit up in bed and scream or cry out.
Adults who suffered from night terrors as a child may experience them again in adulthood. They are typically triggered by overwhelming stress, sleep deprivation, or even another co-morbid sleep disorder. Genetics are also thought to play a role in this disorder.
