3 Tips to Fight Seasonal Allergies and Sleep like a Baby
For many of us, the spring season and warmer temperatures are a welcome break from the gloom and doom of winter. However, as much as we welcome Spring and all that comes with it, we have to acknowledge that for people who suffer from seasonal allergies, spring can exacerbate issues related to insomnia. If your allergies delay early sleep onset, or cause you to wake up frequently during the night, read on for 3 tips to mitigate the effect of seasonal allergies on sleep quality.
1. Use Caution When Undressing
How many of us are guilty of going into our bedrooms wearing the same clothing we wore outdoors during the day? If pollen and other irritants from the air tend to flare up your allergies, consider undressing in a different room other than your bedroom. Undressing in your bedroom is a great way to spread all those outdoor irritants into the air and worse yet, onto your bed, where you hope to lie down and take respite from the cares of the day.
2. Take a warm bath or shower and wash your hair
Taking a bath or shower is a good night time routine for most, and doubly so for allergy sufferers. A shower before bed will rinse the pollen and other outside irritants off of your skin. Pollen can also get into your hair, so be sure and rinse your hair to prevent pollen from following you into bed and getting onto your pillows and other bedding.
3. Use a Neti Pot
A Neti Pot is a device which can be used to rinse the nasal passages and clear excess mucus. A salt water solution is typically added to the pot. Regular usage of a Neti Pot, especially before bedtime, can leave airways feeling free and unencumbered, perfect for carefree bedtime snoozing. Consult with your doctor to see if nasal rinsing is right for you.
